Go Make Disciples

Updated: Jan 6, 2019

It has been said, “When we sow a thought, we reap a behavior. When we sow a behavior, we reap character. And when we sow a character, we reap a destiny.” Therefore, if the destiny of the church is reaching the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ through seeking and saving the lost, then we must think right thoughts about how to accomplish this purpose!

Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJV)

Jesus said to his disciples... "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

This past year, I read a book by one of our Assistant General Superintendents of the UPCI, Rev. Stan Gleason. This book, Follow to Lead, influenced my complete perception in regard to soul winning and disciple making. I would like to share several of the thoughts from this book in our vision casting and throughout the remainder of this year.

We should understand that thinking precipitates behavior.

Proverbs 23:7

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he...

We must have the correct theological approach to seeking and saving the lost. We should not always act upon our first thoughts or just anything that comes to our mind. Furthermore, we cannot just rely on things that have worked for other churches.

Yes, it may sound good. Yes, we may be able to do it, but does it fully support the command of Jesus Christ?

Just because we can convince people our ideas are good, doesn’t always mean we should do them immediately or maybe we shouldn’t even do them at all. We must seek alignment with the principles of scripture, have wise counsel, and we must be willing to bring our purpose in line with God’s purpose.

Thinking right will precede doing right!

For us to do what God has purposed for us to do, we must be intentional about following His will. We must bring ourselves in line with the will of God.

Often times, we seem to make finding God’s will more difficult than what it really is.

Following God’s will is as simple as following His commandments and scriptural principles. If we do not follow His commandments & principles, His will cannot be fulfilled in our life.

God’s will begins with you doing what you already know to do is right!

...it’s as simple as doing the right thing.

God will empower you to do what He has called you to do! So, just DO RIGHT!

If a vehicle is not operated according to the specifications of the owner’s manual, then the performance of that vehicle will be something less than what the designer designed it to be.

Paul’s admonishment, in Corinthians, challenges us...

1 Corinthians 9:22-23

...I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.   And this I do for the gospel's sake...

Therefore, if God has called us to reach the world with the gospel, He will not only give us the POWER to do it, but He will also EQUIP us with His STRATEGY in our unique world, so that we can fulfill His unique purpose.

It’s nice to think of a vehicle with a high horse power engine, but it would render a vehicle ineffective if the designer didn’t design it with a steering wheel, tires, and a way to inject the fuel into the engine. All that engine power would be worthless, unless there was a way to get the power into the wheels to move the vehicle down the highway.

Moving the vehicle is the whole purpose of the power!

We all delight in the power of the Holy Ghost, but there has to be more than just power to reach our world. There must be purpose through which we channel this power to reach the lost! There must be more than power to fulfill the purpose of reaching this world with the gospel of Jesus Christ! I truly believe discipleship is the purpose that puts the power into reaching the lost with the Gospel!

Matthew 28:19 (NKJV)

GO... MAKE DISCIPLES...

You can walk down the battery isle of Walmart and be impressed with the packaging and labels of the batteries sitting on the shelves. You can read about how much power they possess and be impressed by the potential of what it could accomplish, but the power contained in those batteries will not be released until they are connected to a purpose.

The power cannot be released without a purpose!

If all it took was power, then the world would already be saved, but power has to go to purpose in order to get the job done.

Acts 1:8

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: AND ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

With God, we not only receive power, but we also receive purpose in discipleship to put the power into action! Not only will God empower you, but He will equip you to do what He has called you to do! He will give you purpose.

He is the designer. We are the designed.

Psalms 100:1-5

Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.  Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.  Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.  Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.  For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Psalms 139:14

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

1 Peter 2:9

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

We are on a divine mission set forth by God Almighty!

Every-single-one-of-us has a purpose in God!

Matthew 28:19 (NKJV)
